Question: Can Muslims Eat from Utensils That Have Been Used to Eat Pork?
Answer: The best for muslims is to avoid using those utensils unless there is no alternative. Then it is permissible to use it after washing. According to Shafi’i mazhab, it has to be cleansed by sertu method.
According to the of scholars from the Shafi’i mazhab (school of thought), pork falls in the category of najis mughallazah (major impurity). All section of a pig wether its hair, meat, bone, skin is considerd najis mughallazah. Any area that comes into contact with it has to be cleansed once with water that is mixed with earth (soil) and then followed by clean water 6 times. This method is referred to as sertu.
This is based on a Hadith narrated by Muslim:
«طُهُورُ إِنَاءِ أَحَدِكُمْ إِذَا وَلَغَ فِيهِ الْكَلْبُ أَنْ يَغْسِلَهُ سَبْعَ مَرَّاتٍ أُولاَهُنَّ بِالتُّرَابِ»
“Cleanse your vase which the dog licked by washing it seven times and the first (wash) is with earth (soil).”
According to Mazhab As-Syafie, this hadith is referring to dog and anything similar to it, including pig. Moreover pig is considered as a bigger najis.
